A Forum For Those Touched By Pallister-Killian Syndrome

Will any of you vaccinate your child/ren against the Swine Flu? I, personally, never get the flu shot, though Jim does. Simon has had the flu shot in the past, but the potential side effects and the make-up of the swine flu vaccine worry me more. (By the way, my doctor does recommend it)

As I understand it, only children (and under 25) seniors and immune compromised folks will be able to get the swine flu shot. I personally am still not sure what to do. I used to be more in the "don't vaccinate" camp in general for children. But I have sort of come full circle on this issue and now am more comfortable with vaccinating my kids... I too have heard of the potential side effects of this particular vaccine. So, not much help, I guess as I am "sitting on the fence" over this one.

I 100% agree with general vaccinations, but this one???? I just don't know!

We will do it if available as well as the general flu vaccine!

I am not planning on giving Airyn a flu shot. She had one her first year of life. We all did that year. We usually don't get flu shots and this time I feel the same. The potential that worse things could happen rather than just the normal precautions worry me also. I'm willing to take my chances NOT getting the shot.
I would feel awful if Airyn got real sick because I let her get the shot.

Gracie's doctor, whom I trust completely, is insisting that she gets it. Gracie has had a flu shot every year since birth, and I feel comfortable with her getting this one too.

I don't think i want Alex to get this (or my other kiddos)...i was already worrying about this and i was just hearing a report this morning that they are going to be documenting any side affects & dr. visits etc. from patients getting the vaccine. Apparently when they tried 'another' swine flu vaccine many years back there were 500 cases of some paralysing side affect. It's scary enough to get the norm vaccines but a new one---i don't know. It took me a long time to trust and get the regular flu vaccine. Not sure....hmmmm...

My fear from any flu shots are worse effects. Because Airyn takes a cold pretty hard I dont want to put her in the hospital by giving her a flu shot....especially when we don't know for sure how this one will affect the already susceptible.

I just made an appt today for the children to get the regular flu shot and the nurse told me she was unsure if the Drs were going to recommend the other. It is not in yet and we have cases in our area of the swine flu! It makes me want to stay home!!

As a person with a low tolerance I myself get the flu shot every year....i tend 2 catch colds & the flu very easily every year and i skipped a shot in 2008 and had 2 deal wit a very bad flu and respitory infection 4 2mths(from x-mas til feb same cold in 2006 bcause i skipped it.) When i do get my shots the colds are not as bad and I tend 2 get over them faster. As for my husband he has a high tolerance so he doesnt see a change when he gets a flu shot or not. I am the same with medications it could say non drowsy and it will knock me out....my tolerance level is very low. So all 3 of mine(incl Nasaya)gets flu shots. As for the swine flu shot, I'll pray about it but I probably will get them to. Cases for the swine flu in Charlotte NC are popping up as well.

In Australia the vaccine is now available to the majority of the population. There are some exclusions such as children under 10, allergies. It is freely available at my work (Royal Perth Hospital) and at most community clinics. The Government (in their wisdom) publicly announced that is was available at all doctors surgeries and by the days end most doctors ran out or did not get their stocks in time. This lead to a mass uproar by the public. But by the end of next week stocks will arrive and the majority of the people can have it. And they are. Our winter season is over but in the north its about to begin. A word of warning. This virus is a nasty one and will knock you about. A female colleague ended up a week in ICU after testing positive for the virus, she was 37. Thankfully she made a full recovery but it will knock you about even if you are fit and healthy.
I personally would support the vaccination. Our kids started the normal seasonal flu vaccination early this year and will continue with it from now on. If it was available I would get them to take the jab. As it is not approved to children under 10 they both miss out. There are trials being conducted now but can see it being available to them by the years end. A male colleague had his jab done today and only felt a little odd afterwards, probably anxiety. I see far too many people in hospital that have not been vaccinated to some of the common pathogens and then get sick (expecting then the medical system to get them right). I would not compromise my kids in any way shape or form by not allowing them to take an immunisation if it means improving their immune system repertoire.

On a side issue I am currently undertaking a drug trial (taking a drug myself) for the prevention of the flu and since the start (14 weeks) have not even had a sore throat. Terzita have been really sick during that time and I did not even get a sore throat. Looking forward to these results because if I was in fact taking the drug and not the placebo then we are on a real great discovery!

I have also attached the information sheet that was sent to us yesterday for your information.

Nic

PS: is it available to children under 10 in the US???
